Vintage French HUET Military Range Finder~Compass

Offered for sale is a military Range Finder ~ Compass ~ Surveying Instrument, issued to the French Armed Forces by France's War Department as a military range finder. The exact positioning of the divisions rings' inner black line in front of the needle was made possible by means of a prism attached to a swiveling fitting. The compass's line of sight is represented by another black line drawn on the opposite to the knurling screw. The magmatic deviation could be adapted to a half degree. The corresponding scale features divisions from 20 degrees West to 5 degrees East. The HUET Company was headed by a Paul Huet located in PARIS FRANCE

We believe from historic records of the HUET Company that the age or circa of this instrument is 1923/1924 and was then called a SITOMETER. The instrument comes with a fitted leather case.

The instrument is both a Range Finder, a Compass, a Binocular, and a Survey Instrument and then hade the name of SITOMETER.

The Range Finder Scale is shown on the reverse side (not shown). the Scale is from 0 - 1000 and 1/20000. The Eye Scope is a loop on the post. There is also a Level Scale/Scope to level the instrument. The compass is circular as shown on the photo. The Range Finder Scale is from 0-800 and 800-1600. I measures 1 5/8" x 3" and has a fitted leather case, as shown in the photo. The Range Finder was in reality an ARTILLERY LEVEL system called a SITOMETER. Abbrev: M.G.= Military de la Gru.

Provenance: Christie's ~ 1999
